IN THE TEMPLE OF ATHENA

In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
All the bells will tinkle under the firmament of Olympus
Snow-white swans will swim in the pools
The murmur of brooklets will be heard beneath the rocks

In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
The lyre of Orpheus will tell an ancient love story
The flutes of nymphs will herald your arrival
The loving turtledoves will perch on the olive trees

In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
From the same cup we will drink the wine–sweet as your eyes
I will extinguish your burning lips with mine
Under the glimmering stars we will sculpt the monument of passion

In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight

The Armenian Poets in Song
Les Poètes Arméniens en Chansons

BIRD SOUL Several years ago, the Tekeyan Cultural Association had a celebration in New York City, honoring the 75th anniversary of the Armenian writer and poet Khachik Dashtents. I took part in the evening, interpreting two songs that I wrote using the lyrics of his poems. The text of one of Bird Soulthese songs, Armenian, which I adapted into the form of an anthem, is included in all handbooks of Armenian literature published in the Diaspora. The audience greeted the song with great enthusiasm. I believe there were two reasons for this. In the first place, its message exhorts students to speak Armenian in the countries where it is threatened with disappearance; and in the second place, I sang it with a little choir of young girls who presumably have gotten the message...
